GENERAL INFORMATION

The MIS/Data Processing department is located in the main courthouse west of the Clerk's Office and south of the Treasurer's Office. Not only do we provide computer services for offices in the courthouse but also offices at Emergency Management, Arkansas City County Attorney Office, Sheriff's Office Work Release,. Noxious Weeds  Office, three Road and Bridge Districts, Landfill, and  Memorial Lawn Cemetery. On request we provide assistance to the City/County Health Department, Extension Office and Community Corrections. We have  LAN and WAN. We currently have in operation an AS/400 system for maintaining the tax database, appraisal system, vehicle tags, and other databases needed that serve the needs of the county departments. Our Web site and Email is in house at www.cowleycounty.org

We are now operating a WAN, (Wide Area network). We have and are in the continuing process of connecting computers throughout the county for county business.  We are helping the County Health Department as they grow into the WAN to serve their needs throughout the county.  We are also part of the KANWIN network the State maintains.

We are a 24/7 operation to support the Law Enforcement needs. Our department has created an access database utilized by each department to track requisitions separate from the accounting program used to pay the bills in the Clerk’s Office. Various other databases have been set up for different departments to facilitate computerizing formerly record keeping by hand. We maintain a backup of the file server and the AS400 programs and files on a daily basis. We are learning and have moved into helping with imaging and GIS as these processes become more active in the county. As requested by the various departments, specialized data requests for third party entities are produced utilizing printing, creating data CD's and diskettes or tape. Our department sets up each PC for all other departments . The workstations are customized to each department and users needs. Cabling is handled by our department as are the minor computer repairs as is problem determination for all systems.

We maintain an active membership in a state chapter called KSGMIS. The members are information technology professionals from state and local governments. The mission of the association is to share ideas and information about how we can best use technology in government. The Kansas chapter is an affiliate of the Kansas Association of Counties. We maintain a membership in the National Association of the Government Management Information Systems. Their Web Site is: www.gmis.org
