Cowley County Celebrates Sesquicentennial

Cowley County is celebrating its 150th birthday throughout 2017. Cowley County was officially organized sesquicentennial_logoand named Hunter County in March 1867 and encompassed a larger territory reserved for the Osage Indians.

The county was soon renamed for Matthew Cowley, first lieutenant in Company I of the 9th Kansas Cavalry, and the boundaries changed to present day Cowley County. The first brave settlers came to stake their claims along pristine waterways and among the rolling Flint Hills when the county opened for settlement in 1870.

To mark the county’s sesquicentennial, a traveling display highlighting Cowley County communities, historical events and local folklore will be on display at summer and fall festivals and community events for the public to view. The first location is Dexter City Park during the Dexter BBQ on July 8 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

For the second summer, the fun dining promotion “Back Road Dining in Cowley County” is kicking off May 6th.  Once again, Cowley First-Cowley County logoEconomic Development has teamed up with five restaurants in Cowley County to offer a chance to win a $25 dining gift certificate.

Those wishing to participate in the Back Road Dining promotion are asked to dine at all five participating restaurants where they can receive a punch card. After eating at all five establishments their completed card will be entered into the free drawing. You may complete the Back Road Dining circuit more than once prior to the conclusion of the promotion on September 10, 2017. Continue Reading

This notice covers persons who have applied to register to vote and have not yet provided proof of citizenship. Due to recent court rulings, if you have applied to register to vote at a Kansas Division of Motor Vehicles office or if you have applied to register to vote using the “Federal Form” voter registration application (as opposed to the standard ‘state form’) and have not yet provided proof of citizenship, you are registered to vote for the November 8, 2016, general election. Your name will appear on the poll book for your voting location and you will be given a standard ballot. There is nothing further you need to provide subject only to further official notice.
