GIS

What is GIS?

GIS

GIS is a rapidly growing technological field that incorporates graphical features with tabular data in order to assess real-world problems.

A GIS (Geographic Information System) is a computer system capable of assembling, storing, manipulating, and displaying geographically referenced information, i.e. data identified according to their locations.  Simply put, a GIS combines layers of information about a place to give you a better understanding of that place.  See illustration to the right for a visual representation of this concept.

The layers of information you combine depends on your purpose. Some common examples would include: finding the best location for a new store, analyzing environmental impact of a development, calculating buildable land available in a area, viewing similar crimes in an area to detect a pattern, and so on.
