Cowley County/Communities Housing Study being prepared
Cowley County Economic Development Partnership, Cowley First, is preparing a County/Communities Comprehensive Housing Study. Assistance is being provided by Hanna:Keelan Associates, P.C., a community planning and research consulting firm, located in Lincoln, Nebraska. Hanna:Keelan, in its 36th year, has completed 1,100+ community plans and housing studies in an 18 State area, including the State of Kansas. The Housing Study is scheduled for completion in mid-September, 2014.
A Housing Steering Committee has been organized to provide Cowley First and Hanna:Keelan input and direction during the preparation of the Housing Study. The Committee includes community leadership and organization representatives from across Cowley County.
Cowley First wants to match housing opportunities with those of business recruitment and expansion. “A comprehensive County-Wide Housing Study will be very important in keeping pace with the community and economic development goals and objectives.” states Kerri Falletti, Director, Cowley County Economic Development Partnership. “The Housing Study will be extremely helpful in attracting new housing stock to the County. Housing is directly related to economic development and it will be the Cowley First’s goal, once the Study is completed, to actively pursue both public and private dollars for housing construction and rehabilitation.”
The Cowley County/Communities Comprehensive Housing Study will include important population, income and economic data, a housing stock analysis, strategies for affordable housing development, a Five-Year “Housing Action Plan” and funding options for future owner and rental housing development and housing rehabilitation projects. County residents will have the opportunity to participate directly in the preparation of the Housing Study, by completing opinion surveys and attending housing informational meetings.
“The Comprehensive Housing Study will address the housing needs and wants of all residents of Cowley County, including all age and household income sectors”, states Falletti. “Special attention will be given to the determination of need for varied housing types for the County’s workforce and elderly households and families of all sizes.
